Cut Initiation
Using the laser in pulsed mode to drill a hole, typically using nitrogen, oxygen or air as the assist gas.

Cut Termination
The end of a cut. Typically the last millimetre or so of a cut will have a different cut quality from the rest of the cut.

Cut Width
Typically between 0.1mm and 0.4mm, the width of a laser cut is dependent on the laser focal length, the type of cutting gas used and the properties of the material being cut

Cutting Bed
The area on the laser cutting machine where the material to be cut is placed. The size of objects which can be cut is limited by the cutting bed size.

Cutting Gas
Also known as assist gas, used to blow cut material away from the cut. Examples include air, oxygen, nitrogen and inert gases such as argon. The best type to use for a given cutting job will depend on the material to be cut.

Cutting Pattern
The instructions programmed into the laser cutting machine to produce a particular object.
